From Guilford Education Alliance

Let's Make a Resolution for Education

Guilford Education Alliance challenges you to find your voice. Speak out for education and never stop talking so others will hear and the message for educational change will not go away.  Please join us in advocating for our children!

The US ranked 19th in the world for education in 1983; today we rank 23rd. If you had the perception we are number one, you now know we are not even close. Education is a valuable asset and we must speak for the children because if we- the advocates for the future- don't, who will? As Dennis Bega, Keynote Speaker at the Education Summit and Senior Education Advisor in the US Dept. of Education,  stated, there is no 501 c-3 and no board of directors for the children of America. "We" means all of us, and we must become strong advocates for a better education system and demand that we get a "return on our investment."

Summer Reading Book Sale

May need more help from PTSA for setup - 2-3 days of work; alternate plan would be for B&N could sponsor at their store; will table this item for further discussion

Central Superintendent Dr. Terry Worrell will hold a town hall meeting on Monday, Feb. 8th, 7PM at GUILFORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (located AT 920 Stage Coach Trail 27410).

Kiser Liaison:

Report from Ella Hairston: Kiser is finally getting a security system, with hopes that cameras will be installed as a part of the next budget year.

Kisers' Auxillary Gym is now complete and has usable space. Kiser does have to still borrow the wrestling mats from Grimsley though.

Kiser 8th graders will be taking a Computer Skills test, which is not a requirement of the state of NC but is something that GCS wants to have students take. Scores will be reported to the State.

Kiser will be offering some Parent Empowerment Workshops as a part of the Advocacy Committee. These workshops will target the parent needs assessment survey, which was sent home at the beginning of the year. The purpose of the workshops will be to educate parents on the many services that are available for free in the community as well as provide information on the top areas of concern voiced on the assessments:

beyond middle school - planning for high school and college;

raising healthy children; addressing the developmental needs of children; & communication and discipline needs for children.

Kiser serves as a cluster site for ESL students this year which means that students who would have attended other schools with ESL teacher availability now attend Kiser because ESL services are provided. Great report – thanks, Ella.

Leadership Team:

Welcome to Azell Reeves, GHS parent.

After much effort, The Whirlwind was distributed to all homeroom teachers in time for their Whirlie Wednesday homeroom (12/2). Volunteer Coordinators:

Kristie Hobson (kristiekhobson@hotmail.com) & Pam Vinson (pavinson@bellsouth.net) continue to coordinate the numerous parent/guardian volunteers who support GHS. Thanks to both! To all: Please reach out to those not yet involved with the GHS community & let’s encourage new-comers.

From the GCC PTA:

Gov. Perdue Launches eLearningNC.gov

www.elearningnc.gov

In November Governor Bev Perdue announced the launch of eLearningNC.gov,

.0 (with a visit to GHS!) the entry point to all the eLearning resources North Carolina has to offer.  The new web site will provide an easy one-stop-shop for any North Carolinian, from K-12 students to life-long learners, who wants to take advantage of online learning such as the NC Virtual Public School, online courses from community colleges or universities, and online career building.

eLearningNC.gov was created by a partnership between the Office of the Governor, the North Carolina Education Cabinet, and the North Carolina eLearning Commission.

eLearning provides all K-12 students, regardless of location or background, with the ability to take online courses that would normally not be available to them.  Additionally, eLearning provides all college students and adults with the opportunity to take courses and learn new skills through retraining or advanced degrees.

Respectfully submitted,

along with warm wishes to all for a happy, safe & healthy holiday season,

Valerie Stern

7:00pm in the GHS Media Center

In attendance:  Valerie Stern, Karen Rechtin, Marian Dotts, Cathy Jordan, Ruthie Harriman, Donna Kabadi, Margaret Ramsey, Billie Davidson, Anita Hyman, Teri Hammer, Kate Cummings, Sarah Beth Diachenko, Elizabeth Stephens, Ellen Geffen, Anna Brady

President’s Report

Valerie Stern reviewed upcoming events and asked everyone to review their agenda for the many upcoming events, including;  exams, May 13 Senior Tea (add to schedule,) May 18 Tentative Book Sale date (this will also be combined with the next general PTSA General Meeting)

Thanks to everyone that worked at the 3 concession stands at ACC tournaments.  It was a great experience, lots of fun, and very successful.
From Alana Neal - The faculty challenge for PTSA sign up resulted in 80 new faculty members.  The total membership now stands at 543.  Grimsley won two awards for increased membership this year.  An anonymous donor will match new membership dollars for faculty memberships added in February.

Grimsley was awarded a $750 Spice Grant for the Whirlie Insider, a publication to help students be more successful at Grimsley.  Four editions will be distributed in the newsletter; the first in the May/June newsletter, the second in the back to school newsletter.  The award was mentioned in the News and Record.  We have applied for the Hearst Award and will find out in mid-April if we were winners or not.  The Community Foundation Grant is due in June.  The goal of this grant is to take all 4 PTSA meetings off campus next year and into the community.

Thanks to Niki Bloomquist for coordinating Chick-Fil-a night.  It was very successful and everyone enjoyed the Drum Line performance.  They are willing to work with us to do it once a month next year, and we get 15% of receipts.  Please start thinking of entertainment opportunities for each month.  We are still collecting and receiving $$ from the fundraising campaign.

Valerie is working with the historian on another campaign.  He is currently working on obtaining missing trophies from the proper period.  He is also working on the banner campaign with school motto.  We have funding for first two banners for the front walkway; they will be outside but under cover.  The goal is to have banners in every single building by end of next school year.  Donation campaign will begin soon.

Grimsley is in Region 4 in the new GCS Regional Plan.  SMOD will continue to be a site based decision, probably not anything we need to worry about.

Grimsley has volunteered to staff a concession stand for 13 games in May.  12-15 volunteers are needed per shift.  Beer is served, but one or two minors can work each shift.  They want a few volunteers two hours before game to get the stand ready.  We are working with the Grasshoppers to do a Page/Grimsley spirit night.  It would be after exams, with competitions between schools in between innings.
The PTSA Board commitment sheet being circulated, please consider what position you want and add new names if aware of people that would be interested.  Need volunteer coordinator for next year, also free money volunteers.

Sherwin Williams has offered to a partnership with Grimsley, where we would get a percentage of sales from customers who give the Grimsley account number at time of purchase.  This is a new free money opportunity.

Principal’s Report

Mrs. Brady reported that a building committee has been formed to work on the cafeteria, track, and gymnasium projects funded by bond money.  Staff, parents and alumni are on the committee.  It will meet the third Wednesday on every month at 9:00am, and is an open forum.  Minutes will be taken and posted on website.  Thank you to everyone that helped Saturday on work day.  The campus looks great.  There was vandalism last night on campus, the orange paint is already cleaned up.  The vandals have been caught and are not students at Grimsley.  Paint was found on cars, doors, media enter, and sidewalks.  Ninety two students were inducted into the National Honor Society tonight.  The administration is moving forward on a schedule that will allow students to have 40-45 minutes, one day a week, for study hall/homeroom.  It will be called Whirlie Wise Day and will include professional learning time for teachers during day.  Students have liked idea of this.

Schools are losing teachers due to budget cuts, we need to have a plan to reduce number lost.  SMOD is not likely at Grimsley, but administration would like to see a requirement of shirts tucked in.  Administration is looking for good cell phone policy.  Phone use at school is becoming a nightmare.  Phones should not be on during the day.  Enforcing policies takes a lot of time every day to deal with.  Suggest asking student council and leadership for their input on this topic.

Treasurer’s Report

Teri Hammer reported that she has received the invoice for $3900 for calculators.  There will only be $3800 carry forward for next year.  We have done a great job of fundraising in last few months.  It was suggested that leadership start discussing what the $6000 from the fundraising campaign should be used for.  The PTSA will continue doing small fundraisers, and will focus on things where people can volunteer time instead of giving money.

Committee Reports

Orchestra – Melanie Rodenbough mentioned the blanket fundraiser.  It used to be done by orchestra.  Good fundraising opportunity for either PTSA or orchestra.  The orchestra did very well at the festival.  The Honor’s Orchestra was the highest scoring orchestra in the Western Region.  They are starting to investigate a trip for next year.  Ms. Greene had a baby girl over the weekend.

Book Sale - beginning planning for sale to be held at the end of May

Newsletter – Information for the May/June issue is due Friday.  It will go out at end of April.

Grade Reps – Volunteers are needed for the coat check at the prom.  Ruthie Harriman is leading this project.  The prom will be held at the Empire Room.  Brief discussion was held on various options for coat check.  Marion Dotts reported that TWIRP went well.  There was quite a bit of inappropriate dancing at TWIRP and an announcement will be made that will not be tolerated at prom.

Media Center – Kate Cummings reported the Media Center is short staffed next year due to eliminating all media assistant positions.  Our assistant was a very hard working person and it will be hard to run the media center without one.  Volunteers are needed for media assistants, mainly to check in and check out books.

Faculty Liaison - Anita Hyman reported that Dale Carnegie conducted continuing education on two teacher workdays.  This was very beneficial, as it was something to help teachers better themselves. Dale Carnegie donated a 10 week session as a prize which Mrs. LaFevers won.

Convocation – Will be held June 4 at 7:00.  It still too early to start planning.

Calendar – Margaret Ramsey requested that you send all calendar info to her or Susan Oliver

Leadership Team - Donna Kabadi introduced the Way to Go Whirlies program to reward students for good behavior.  She is asking the PTSA for $$ to purchase prizes, as well as to help with idea for and donations of prizes, and thinks she needs about $240 for this year.  These will be used as rewards for whatever they want to recognize.  As students earn tickets, they are put in drawing for each month.  All monthly winners are entered into quarterly big drawing, and end of year bigger drawing.  She thinks that the quarterly and year end drawings should be money, as all students would be interested in winning this.  Mrs. Brady offered to give money from her discretionary fund for this.  Hope to have PTSA committee for this next year.

Reflections – The theme for next year will be announced in the next newsletter.

Senior News - Kate Cummings mentioned that the 70th annual Senior Tea will held on May 13th.  As far as we know, we are the only high school in NC that does this.  This event is for seniors and faculty and is held at Greensboro College.

We still have lots of Grimsley note cards that we need to sell.  They are great for thank you notes and other senior correspondence.  They feature a William Magnum print of Grimsley High School.  In the past we have charged $10 for 8 cards.  Teri Hammer offered to collect money and pick up cards.

The meeting was dismissed at 8:25.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Rechtin

Secretary

Notes in lieu of the cancelled meeting that was to be held 3/3/09

PRESIDENT'S REPORT:  Once again, many thanks to those who have stepped up to volunteer to work the concession stand this week. I will get out the schedule/times for the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament  when it is available.  Please look at your calendar for March 19th & 21st as we will work the booth again for the Men's Tournament.

Please think about your commitment to the Board for 2009-2010.  We have much to accomplish!  Also, please pass along names of people who may be interested in serving on the Board.

I had a great day at Southern Guilford High School, participating in "Principal for a Day." Next meeting I will share my observations re: SMOD, ISS & Senior Project. (See SMOD article at end of notes.)

MANY thanks to Alana Neal - I put out a "T Challenge" for the Teachers (T stands for the T in PTSA) for the month of February to encourage faculty memberships in the PTSA.  It was a great success thanks to Alana!  A very generous Grimsley community member offered to match the funds if all teachers joined by the end of February. We'll let Alana share the faculty membership numbers with us at the next meeting.

Round of applause for Lane Brown - she wrote & submitted an application for the Hearst Award & we will hear in mid-April if we are a recipient.  We will receive a merit award (no money, but recognition) for entering, and we are hopeful we will win either a $500 or $2000 grant.

Way to go, Elizabeth Stephens!  She put together yet another great edition of the WHIRLWIND (battling the flu, no less)!

Hope you read the email I sent out thanking all volunteers who donated items and/or worked the GHS Yard Sale!  We hit a home run - $550!  Not bad for a day's work!

Let's all support the great effort Nicole Bloomquist put in to making a Chick-fil-A Whirlie Spirit Fundraiser happen! On March 18th, order breakfast from  6:30AM - 8:00AM  and dinner from 5:00PM - 8:00PM at the Friendly Center Chick-fil-A, wear your Whirlie Wear (Nancy & Gay can hook you up), mention GHS -- and we earn much needed funds (15%)  for the PTSA! Look for fliers to appear in our great hallways of GHS soon.

I received a phone call from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Their annual "MDA Lock-up" is on April 22nd & would like a representative of GHS to participate.  You choose the time between 9AM and 2PM, they pick you up, "lock you up" at Carrabas on New Garden Road (and feed you) & you participate in the telethon to help raise your "bail" money to send kids to camp this summer.  All the money raised stays in our community. You also get to put your "wanted poster" on their website - they assist you throughout the process.  Sounds like a GREAT day - for a GREAT cause!  Call Remy at 856.1591 (9 to 5, M-F) to volunteer!

As you recall, we received a grant for the "Whirlie Insider" -will be mailed with the  Whirlwind to help assist parents with their children's educational success. Lane Brown & I are heading up the committee to make this happen (first edition will go out in April along with the Whirlwind).  I would like 3 or 4 other volunteers - we will find, compile, layout information, resource tools, etc. for the Insider. We are also going to drop off issues to local churches, community centers, etc. and need assistance with that as well. PLEASE volunteer for this very important project!

We are still asking for contributions to our    PTSA Fundraising Donation Letter  Campaign.  Please consider making a donation & encourage others to do so - any amount is helpful.  Our focus this year is funding technology needs across all departments.  Be sure to ask your employer about matching funds.    Donations are accepted ALL YEAR LONG!

Per our by-laws,  ALL PTSA Board members are to join the PTSA - very affordable at $6.00 per adult and $5.00 (SPECIAL) per GHS student.  What better way to promote school-wide membership than by stating that 100% of board members have joined/paid their membership dues?! Membership form is available in your PTSA newsletter & in the main office - please contact Evelyn Walker at elwalker@dhgriffin.com or by calling her at 382.3264 with any questions.

OTHER REPORTS:

1. NEWSLETTER: We would like to have a new, regular feature in our PTSA newsletter and we need teachers, staff & parents to be the reporters for Whirlie Community Cares.
This column will be all about highlighting our students' "Whirlie pride" and "demonstration of excellence" - anything from going the extra mile in class, heading a service project, reaching out to a fellow student - you get it! Another new item: let all readers know of a company that supports GHS - we will thank the company & put a brief ad in the paper as the thank you.
Please contact Elizabeth at pmswest@bellsouth.net for submissions to our next newsletter. (Elizabeth has authority to edit as needed.)  Can submit photos via email as well!

2.  HOSPITALITY:  March Madness Hospitality event for faculty on March 12th. You'll be receiving details from Nancy Winborn, Gay Brogden & Sandra Howell.

3BRICKPAVERS:   From Susan Gentry:
Whirlie Walkway - We've sold 54 bricks, plus gave one away at the Whirlie Nation Celebration.   Our engraving cost is about $12 per brick so that should be about $700 if we have to pay tax.  We collected $2700 so our profit should be about $2000 this year.  I will continue to take orders for next year's installation.
Contact Susan  for more information at susancgentry@bellsouth.net

4.  PROJECT GRADUATION:  Our first planning meeting was Tuesday night.   The first mailing to senior families is going out and we are working on getting solicitation letters to businesses out.  Anyone interested in helping with this event is invited to help.  Contact Susan Gentry or give your contact information to Alana Neal at school.  We need three things for this event to be successful - high attendance from students in the senior class, monetary donations from Grimsley families (it costs over $10,000 to put this event on each year), and parent volunteers from all grade levels (this event requires hundreds of volunteer hours).

5.  GHS CALENDAR:  important dates:  Blood Drive is March 13th (see Daily Bulletin for details).  Early Release day (1:30PM) is March 20th.  Underclassmen Awards is scheduled for May 20th in the afternoon; Senior Awards is scheduled for June 1st in the morning (more details to come). Please see the calendar insert in your Whirlwind for more dates to remember. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL for underclassmen is now June 15th (seniors' graduation date of June 7th remains the same).

Thank you for all you do for Grimsley High School - our youth are worth our efforts!
Respectfully submitted,
 Valerie Stern    3/4/09

Grimsley High School PTSA Board Minutes

Meeting of February 2, 2009

7:00pm in the GHS Media Center

In attendance:  Judy Turner, Donna Kabadi, Susan Oliver, Margaret Ramsey, Cathy Jordan, Kemp Dalton, Nancy Winborn, Ellen Gefen, Cynthia Leonard, Lane Brown, Niki Bloomquist, Ruthie Harrman, Hailey Barringer, Charli Kelly, Alana Neal, Teri Hammer, Valerie Stern, Sandra Howell, Marian Dotts, Karen Rechtin

Minutes of the November 3, 2008 meeting were approved.

President’s Report

Valerie Stern reported that Grimsley was awarded a Spice Grant this year.  The grant will fund a resource guide for Grimsley parents.  A special edition will be published at the beginning of August, and will be distributed as an insert in the PTSA newletter, delivered to community centers, church offices, etc.  Let Valerie know if interested in helping with this project.

The first round of checks from the donation campaign were processed this week.  The donations will be used to fund technology needs across departments. Expect that donations will continue to come in.

The PTSA has been hit by the economy problems too, and is in need of other money to fund projects.  Valerie presented the idea of participating in the Grasshoppers Yard sale on February 28, Susan Oliver offered to lead this event.  $10 or $30 for spaces, Grasshoppers do all advertising, and Grimsley gets a percentage of the proceeds.  The decision was made to do the Coliseum Concession Stand again this year, for fundraising purposes and if we didn’t participate we would lose our spot.  Dates will be March 6-8, and 19-21, 7:30am-11:00pm all days.  Will need 12-15 volunteers per shift to run the stand (a few older students can work.).  Sign up will be sent out closer to the dates.  Earns between $3000 and $8000 each weekend.

HT VIC Cards are an easy way to make money, but this is the first time ever we didn’t make enough to get check.  Only raised $239 for this period.  Be sure to link your VIC card to the Grimsley PTSA, and get others to link their cards as well. Reminder that you have to re-link your card every year.  This year, prescriptions are included in the VIC dollars.

Susan Gentry has done a great job with brick pavers.  This is last week to place orders.

Forms available if still interested.

Valerie mentioned that we are looking at changing a few things in the PTSA bylaws regarding number of meetings and the membership dues.

The PTSA currently has 434 members; 40 faculty, 31 students, 263 parents.  PTSA board members required to be PTSA members, if you are not currently a member, join soon, and recruit others to join.  Senior students that are members are eligible for PTSA scholarship opportunities.  Contact Evelyn Walker if you are unsure if you are a member.

Mrs. Brady would like banners with the Grimsley slogan hung in every building.  Valerie and the school historian are working on getting banners to match the existing banners.  Funds are needed for these, some parents have offered to sponsor a banner.

Valerie has been selected to be principal for day at Southern High School, she will report on the experience at the next meeting.

The tentative date for the next general PTSA meeting is March 24.  Need a program that will draw parents to school.  Please send ideas to Valerie.  Will need to vote on bylaw changes at this meeting.

Copies of the GCS Visionary Strategic Plan from Moe Greene were distributed.

Think about what board position you want to take next year, a sign up sheet will be distributed at the next meeting.  Some big positions are open…..newsletter, fundraising, free money person treasurer, volunteer coordinator.  If you know of any rising 9th grade parents that would be interested, let Valerie know.

Principal’s Report

Mrs. Brady is sick and was not able to attend the meeting.

Treasurer’s Report

Teri Hammer reported that there have not been many changes since last meeting.  The PTSA is in need of funds, we do not have either the tailgate or directory as expected income opportunities.  We need at least $11,000 to fund basic needs for the remainder of the year.  This is why the yard sale, and the Coliseum concessions are so important.  Niki Bloomquist offered to contact Chic-Fil-a to see about getting a Grimelsy fundraising day or night.

Committee Reports

Student Representative - Hailey Barringer reported that the TWIRP Dance will be held at Bryan Park on Saturday, February 21.  The earlier notice on the date was appreciated this year.  Attendees must be at the dance by 9:30. Students from other schools need permission slips turned in at the main office before tickets can be purchased.  The forms are in the main office.  Last sale date is Friday the 20th.  Wednesday last day for ticket purchases for non-Grimley student purchases is Wednesday, the 18th.

Flower sale orders will be taken through Friday, February 13th, and are $1.00 each.

The prom will be held on April 24 from 9:00pm-1:00am at the Empire Room.  The colors are silver and navy, and will have a masquerade ball theme.  It is currently in the planning stages, volunteers will be needed.  The student council is looking into a fundraiser to raise money for the prom.  Cell phones will have to be checked at the door.

IB seniors will present their extended essays on March 12 or 13.  Donations needed for a reception for about 75 people.  Nancy Winborn said the hospitality committee would take care of this.

Project Graduation - Susan Gentry to step back in to help as the current chairs have had to step down due to family medical problems.  This will be underway soon, and lots of help and funds are needed.

Grade Reps – Eleventh grade is working on senior project decision for next year.  Tenth grade rep is  taking over position and needs assistance in figuring out what the responsibilities are, and what she should be doing.  Sandra Howell will need coat check volunteers for TWIRP.

Newsletter - Tuesday, February 10 is the deadline.  Elizabeth is leaving this position and will help get next person trained in this position.

Beautification - Niki Bloomquist reported there will be a Clean Up day in April, date to be announced.  Will look to spring sports teams for help.

Grants – Valerie thanked Lane Brown for putting everything together for the Spice Grant.  Grants take lots of work and require that everything be in place prior to asking for grant.  If you have any ideas for grants, please send them to Lane Brown.  There is a Hearst Foundation grant available, which we will apply for to look for funding for the meet and greet at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.  Will apply for a Community Foundation grant, for funds for expenses to hold offsite PTSA meetings in the four quadrants of our district.  Funds are needed for food as a draw, also would try to have entertainment.

Hospitality - Still collecting Valentine’s Hershey kisses for faculty.  Will send information soon on upcoming needs.

Athletic Boosters - in need of money and volunteers.  Desperate for money, there is none left in the booster club funds.  If you are not a member, please join the Booster Club.  Get anyone you can to join.  Whirlie Wear is a good way to support.  Looking into other fundraising events.  All sports benefit from booster club funds, as the $21,000 annual budget from the, does not even cover transportation for the fall sports.

Teacher Rep - Kemp Dalton reported there is no report.  Thank you from teachers for the recent brunch.

Reflections - Grimsley had several winners, and we were well represented.  The theme for this year is ‘Beauty is………….’

Calendar-Working on March and April calendar now.  Need entries by February10th.

Leadership - Leadership meetings have been very upbeat, with lots of positive things going on.

Miscellaneous Business

The Grimsley orchestra performed with the Greensboro Symphony last Saturday night and did a great job.

The recent Coffee and Tea with Mrs. Brady was well received.

Human Race-Possible fundraiser if the Grimsley Alumni is not participating in.  Need to find out, race is on March 28.

Free form discussion between board members on the recent mid term exams, how well they reflect the kids knowledge, how even they are between teachers and classes, and the grading of the tests.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Rechtin

Secretary.

Administrative Team meets every day to share day’s issues.  Busy with disciplinary issues & hope to see number of incidents decrease.  Have seen a decline in the past 2-3 weeks – good news.  Most discipline issues are tardy to class, disrespect, & general non-compliance.

Great group of new teachers yet need support.  Are addressing instructional issues.

Great staff & faculty here at GHS!

Problem with cell phone usage in class.

Closed meeting with a PowerPoint  presentation titled Did You Know....Valerie was selected to attend an Educational Leadership Course & viewed this PowerPoint.  Drives home the point that we need to stay updated with technology needs for our students & faculty.  Reminder that our PTSA fundraiser this school year is focused on technology needs across departments.

Valerie Stern

With great thanks to Charli for taking the minutes at the meeting!

Grimsley High School PTSA Board Minutes (Revised)

Meeting of October 6, 2008

7:00pm in the GHS Media Center

In attendance:  Teri Hammer, Karen Rechtin, Judy Turner, Cathy Jordan, Melanie Rodenbough, Kemp Dalton, Deb Hurley, Susan Oliver, Margaret Ramsey, Niki Bloomquist, Cynthia Leonard, Hailey Barringer, Billie Davidson, Lane Harvey Brown, Marian Dotts, Charli Kelly, Elizabeth Stephens, Anna Brady, Vickie Martin, Caroll Vance, Evelyn Walker, Eric Vestal, Ruthie Harriman, Alana Neal, Donna Kabadi, Gay Brogden, Sandra Howell, Laura Friedman, Kate Cummings, Anita Hyman, Nancy Winborn, Valerie Stern

Minutes of the August 4 meeting were approved with one correction

All in attendance introduced themselves to the group.  A contact sheet was circulated to collect address and phone number information.

President’s Report

Valerie thanked all that helped with the Whirlie Nation Celebration.  All feedback was good, no negative comments were received.  Comments received; great that all teachers were out and visible, next year teachers should have identification badges with name and department, next year there should be a cafeteria representative in the cafeteria as those serving refreshments in cafeteria had attendees ask questions about the cafeteria that they could not answer.  Lane Brown said as a new Grimsley parent, it is very helpful to see the campus, and meet staff and parents.  It was reported that there was some confusion among sophomore, junior and senior families as to why they were there as it was geared more toward new students.  Some families thought it was ‘Walk the Schedule’ night.

Students are able to register to vote on campus if they are old enough.  Some students that are old enough to vote may need transportation to vote.

There will not be a school sponsored tailgate before the Page Grimsley football game this year.  Over the summer, Page asked to have joint tailgate, then 3 weeks ago decided they were having their own tailgate.  We will not have one this year as it is a lot of effort for a very short event time and it makes little to no money.  Valerie requested that grade reps start thinking about a spring community event that can substitute for the tailgate this year.  Hailey Barringer indicated that Page and Grimsley are working together to find a joint school service project, possibly a Habitat for Humanity house.  The ROTC is having a canned food drive today through October 16th.

We will sponsor a Donation Campaign again this year, and are asking for needs from school.  The goal is to have the letter out by the end of October.

Valerie has met with Mo Green one on one – she is very impressed with him as he is focused on all students with all needs.  He will be at our general PTSA meeting on Wednesday, November 5.  There was a request for ideas to get parents to attend (especially those that don’t normally attend events,) as he will speak at meeting and we would like to have a strong parent showing.  After discussion of several ideas for the format of the meeting, it was decided to have the meeting in the library to create a more intimate ‘face to face’ type event, and to serve cake and coffee.  Please participate in the ‘Mo Wants to Know’ online survey.

There is not enough PTSA money to fund the Williams’ Scholarship this year, and we would like to contact the Williams’ family to see if they will help fund this year, but no one knows who the family is.  A suggestion was made to contact historian, as he might know.

Student Directory – Regulations prohibit publishing a directory unless every person in it approves their being in it, so there will probably not be a directory this year. The group feels strongly that this is needed, so a discussion was had on ways to get students/parents to give permission to be in the directory early in the school year.  The consensus was to either send forms with schedules next year, or add permission to be in the directory to the permissions check off sheet students must return at the beginning of the school year.

The PTA bylaws state that all board members must be PTSA members.  If you have not joined, do so immediately.  Evelyn Walker reports current membership at; 220 adults, 100 students, and no faculty members.  Valerie will send a reminder to all staff.  Hailey Barringer suggested that there be publicity to students about the benefits that students receive from the PTSA and that scholarships are available to students, but only if they are PTSA members.

There is progress toward getting the work done on the Grimsley campus through the bond issue.  Grimsley is currently in the second phase, request for proposals.  Grimsley is in the second round of schools to receive funding.

Treasurer’s Report

Teri Hammer reported that we have spent more than current budget, and that we need fundraising to make additional funds.  In the past we have made money from the directory, which we won’t have this year that needs to be made up another way.  Budgets were distributed for review.

Committee Reports

Athletic Boosters – JOIN the Booster Club.  Guilford County Schools gives each school $21,000 each year, which doesn’t even cover the many teams transportation for the year.  Support in other way as well such as attending sporting events, Chipotle night, purchasing Whirlie Wear, etc.

Beautification – There will be a spring clean up, but nothing planned until then.

Calendar – please submit any events you want on the calendar

Community Relations – is working with several groups in the community

Reflections – The Reflections Contest recognizes talents of students in six areas.  Information will be distributed in the next two weeks.  Entries are due before Thanksgiving, as the county deadline is December 2.  Requested a contact in each subject area.  The committee can use the bulletin board across from office to post information.  The theme this year is ‘WOW’

Faculty – A faculty member requested to not have ‘Walk the Schedule’ on Monday, but to have later in week.

Brick Pavers – Susan Gentry is selling

Newsletter - Discussed having newsletter emailed and online.  Most recommendations are to have sent in the US Mail, so that all families are reached and it is more accessible.  Next newsletter deadline is October 15th.  Elizabeth is looking for a replacement to start training.  Please contact her/Valerie if you are interested in taking this position.

Grade Reps – Charli Kelly reported that she has already had junior parents ask about the senior project.  Per Ms Brady, the graduation committee is already meeting and is working on this for next year.  Hope to have decision before Christmas.

Grants – Deadlines are soon for a grant to promote parent involvement (maybe multicultural night,) and a SPICE grant request will be made to help offset the cost of the newsletter.  Contact Ashley Morrison for info for grant writing.  Contact Lane Brown with ideas for grants.

Hospitality – Committee will announce event for fall/October at a later date.  Asked if doing anything for American Education week, Nov 17-21.

TWIRP will be held on February 21, prom date not yet set.  Homecoming is November 8 at the Empire Room.  Tickets are $15 for students, $20 non-Grimsley student.  Grade reps will take over coat check this year, Nancy Winborn will be glad to train.

Project Graduation – Alana reported planning will start in January

Special Student Rep - Request for money from PTSA.  The Life Skills class is in need of kitchen utensils and supplies, listed at $126.22.  Nancy Winborn volunteered that the Athletic Boosters may fund this, as the Life Skills class washes the football team uniforms.  Mrs. Brady said she has ideas on how to get this funded.

Volunteers – A reminder to submit hours in for August and September.  Any/all time spent on school activities should be recorded.

Student Representative – Hailey Barringer reported that the Student Council is investigating ways to fund the prom.  Ideas; spooky woods through cross country trail, change game competition between classes, etc.  The Student Council can conduct two fundraisers per year, so if PTSA sponsors they can have more.

She also reported on Spirit Week;

Monday - Character Day

Tuesday - Flashback Day

Wednesday - Western Day  PSAT/early release no seniors on campus

Thursday - Page Prep Day, stricter dress code this year

Friday - Blue and White Day

Bonfire Thursday night

May have student led tailgate Friday night before game

Principal’s Report – Mrs. Brady reported that it has been a great first 98 days, and that she feels it is an honor to be here.  The kids are great, and doing all different things.  The hardest thing for her is still being an outsider.  She is doing her best to remain in contact with parents and students.  School Improvement Plan Goals-to transform school culture to make all people feel welcome, have the school be a safe place and that students feel safe, and that the teachers free to teach without disruption.  Discipline is much better this year, Kemp commented that it easier to teach, and that teachers are much happier this year.  All members of the administrative team want to be at Grimsley.  It’s all good, and it’s all going to be OK.

312 incidents dealt with since school start.  Suspensions are being done as needed.

Lane asked about communications to parents about incidents.  Mrs. Brady indicated that parents will be notified as soon possible, if incidents are worth parent notification.  Parent in attendance commended that it meant a lot to her when she heard that the faculty rode buses through all feeder neighborhoods to try to understand the culture of the students.  Mrs. Brady explained that teachers took a silent bus tour of neighborhoods that feed into Grimsley.

Alana Neal announced that the Medical Careers classes and the Red Cross will hold a Blood Drive in the auxiliary gym from 9:00-2:30 on October 10.  The goal is 150 pints.  Need to sign up 225 people in to ensure 150 pints.  Must be at least 17 years old, and 110 lbs.  Must stay 10 minutes after donating, then can go back to class.  Eat well the day and morning before donating, drink lots of fluids before and after.  A second blood drive will be held on March 13.  Flu shot clinic is tomorrow for Grimsley staff.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:40.

Students should have received schedules by then and can have the opportunity to meet their teachers Anticipate that many of the students in attendance will be freshmen.

Ask upperclassmen to attend to be ambassadors of the school and to welcome and greet new students and families.  PTSA members should be in attendance for the same reasons, and should try to recruit someone who is not usually involved at Grimsley to attend.  All students in attendance should wear Whirlie Wear if possible. In case of rain, it will be held in the main building, and under the overhangs outside.  Possible 2500 people in attendance, as Kiser’s open house is the same evening.

The drum line will play, and the marching band and cheerleaders will be there.  Still need to contact the jazz band and Madrigals to see if they will perform.  All clubs will have a representative at the event to provide information to students.  Athletic Boosters will be selling season tickets, tickets to the Little 4, and Whirlie Wear.  The PTSA will be selling memberships.

There is a lot of information that new students and families need and desire when they come to Grimsley.  A table will be set up with information handouts.  Ideas for information are:  campus map, bell schedule, important contacts, website information, club list, student event calendar, school year calendar, ‘What I wish I knew as a freshman,’ attendance policies, volunteer forms, membership forms, lunch schedule and how lunch works, how to get a parking permit, how to get permission for off campus lunch (for seniors only), locker information, suggestion box for attendees to submit suggestions of needs not met at this event (to prepare for next year.)

Charli Kelly and Evelyn Walker volunteered to put together packets of information above, that will become a permanent part of the information that students get when they come to Grimsley.

Tables may be needed, if not able to get through GCS.  Will notify if tables are needed.

Try to get local media in attendance to cover this positive event at Grimsley!

Last year was a difficult year at Grimsley, this event is the first step toward positive change this year.

General discussion and information:

  • Alana suggested that all parents read the Grimsley handbook that is handed out the first day of school, as it includes all the information parents and students should need about policies and procedures.
  • There will be two lunch periods, early and late, split by a short period of time to avoid overlap in cafeteria
  • Parking permit is needed to park in the student parking lot

Some of the accomplishments of the PTSA this year-

  • Obtained 2nd defibrillator
  • Purchase recycling bins for club
  • Sponsored underclass awards and awarded scholarships
  • Administer William’s Scholarship and Sanders Scholarship
  • Made lots of money through concessions

There are still two events for the year:

  • End of year teacher luncheon

A motion was made and seconded to make Patricia Aronson an honorary permanent member of the Grimsley PTSA.   She has been involved in the school system for many years and deserves this recognition.

Treasurer’s Report: A budget was distributed, and request that any outstanding expenses be turned in for reimbursement.  Teri Hammer reported we need to make minor budget changes to cover the Teacher’s Luncheon.  A motion was made and seconded to move funds from reserves to hospitality.  Punch and cake for convocation will be paid from funds other than hospitality.

The PTSA will look into selling brick pavers next year as a fundraiser.

Committee Reports

Hospitality - Gay Brogden and Nancy Winborn reported that Convocation is the next event.  The rain plan was discussed.  They asked if coat check can be the responsibility of a committee other than hospitality.  Options may be grade reps, student council, graduates, etc.

Book Sale – Robin Timmins reported that they may not sell their $5700 goal, but should raise more than the budget figure.  It is still going on for one more week.

Principal’s Report:  Mr. Fleming reported that the cameras are being installed, and have already produced two positive results.  They are currently installed in the Main building, and shooting from Main to outside locations.  Other security updates - person in SI needs to be a teacher, and this is in the budget.  We will hire a behavioral specialist.  Want to have a second SRO, but it is not in budget for the year.  Administration is addressing tardiness, and is already seeing improvement.

It is time for end of year testing and underclass exams start Wednesday and go through the end of year.  School will be dismissed at 1:30 on exam days.

Still need to hire several new teachers and a vice principal for next year.

He thanked Melissa for making this such a smooth first year for him at Grimsley.

There was discussion about the problems with the bus parking being in the main parking lot.

Incoming PTSA President, Valerie Stern, proposed an idea to have a ‘Welcome to Grimsley’ event for new students and families the week before school starts.  Information would be available to new parents and students to help them through the introduction to and first days at Grimsley.  Clubs can be onsite and showcase their talents.  Transportation would be provided.  Student ambassadors would be on hand to meet and greet new students.  This will be announced in the June newsletter.  All in attendance agreed that this is a great idea. This event would be to promote a climate change at Grimsley to be more welcoming to all students.  She has support from the Athletic Boosters as well and they have offered to partner in holding this event.

Board positions are still available on the PTSA Board, and Valerie will continue to send emails with updates to the roster and to recruit for open positions.

Melanie Rodenbough presented thank you gift to Melissa Mitchell to recognize her contributions to the PTSA Board and Grimsley High School.

Minutes of Monday, April 14, 2008

7:00 in the GHS Media Center

In attendance:  Melanie Rodenbough, Audrey Smith, Karen Rechtin, Patricia Aronson, Kemp Dalton, Eric Vestal, Susan Oliver, Ann Helton, Cynthia Leonard, Kate Cummings, Kim Kirkman, Teri Hammer, Valerie Stern, Alana Neal, Charli Kelly, Robin Timmons, Susan Gentry

Minutes of March 3 meeting were approved.

President’s Report

Melissa Mitchell reported that she has asked the Leadership Team to come up with items to spend the fundraising campaign donations on this year.  One request is to refurbish and purchase additional microscopes for the science department as funds are not available through the school.  This would cost around $3000.  The math department has asked for sets of TI 83+ or TI 84 calculators for classrooms, which will cost about $6500.  These need to be ordered through educational supply. There has been a request for a new PA system for gym (there is a parent that installs PA systems.)  Discussion followed that we would prefer to use the money for academic pursuits, but depending on the final requests for money we may be able to fit in other non academic needs (PA system.)  Melanie suggested that the PA system could be funded through athletic boosters, and that we should stick with academic expenditures.

Melissa met with Peter Byrd (historian for Grimsley) to talk about his plans for the front of Grimsley High School.  He would like to refurbish the front lawn with period style lanterns, new grass, landscaping, etc.  New Garden will donate planting time if we purchase plant materials from them.  Plants could be purchased by groups, clubs, families, etc. and donated.

Underclass Awards are on May 19.  The Junior Marshals have been announced.  There will be expenses for printing programs and letters, postage for mailing letters to parents of award recipients, etc. and Laura Goodwin needs help getting it done.  This is her last year, and someone needs to take over the coordination of the Underclass Awards.  Whoever takes on this responsibility should work with her this year to learn.

Senior Awards are on May 27.  Melissa has sent a request for Saunders Award nominations.  Nominations are still needed for the William Scholarship, Ruth Award and Josephine Boyd Bradley Scholarship.  Deadline for nominations is May 9.

We received $400 from Harris Teeter.  Fundraising $$ are still coming in.

Two representatives from Edward McKay bookstore were at the meeting to discuss how they can help Grimsley.  Anyone can give all or part of their trade slip to Grimsley High School, either to the school as a whole, the media center or to individual teacher accounts.  They could also be used for student incentives (for books or cds.)  The store

staff will ask customers if they have a balance on their trade slip if they would like to donate to Grimsley instead of throwing away.  Leftover book fair books can be brought in and trade for other books that might be more helpful to the school.  This information will be put in the newsletter.

Audrey Smith was at the meeting representing the Darfur Council.  They are having a concert to raise money for Darfur.  Last year they raised $500 from the concert.  They would like to raise more this year.  They will raffle a meet and greet with the three bands that will be performing, and various gift certificates, for $3.00 per ticket.  They are requesting that the PTSA sponsor the raffle as students can’t sponsor a raffle, and need a pass through for the money.  It will be held April 26, from 6:30-10:00 in the Grimsley Auditorium. Tickets are $5.00.

Two student representatives from the Creative Action Service Club came to announce their fundraiser, “Kiss the Seniors Goodbye” to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Anyone can purchase one of these letters for $1.00 for a senior.  The letter is a note rolled up like a diploma, with a bag of 8 Hershey’s kisses that will be delivered to seniors on their last day of school.  Forms are available in the main office, and will be available from CAS members in main hall and in other areas.

Melissa Tyler and Gail Wood requested the PTSA donate a $25 gift certificate to Friendly Center as a prize.  A motion to do so was approved by board.  The talent show will be held Friday night in the auditorium.

Principal’s Report

This is an extremely busy time of year.  Staff development is being held to prepare kids for EOC’s and finals, to reduce kids that will fail, have retakes, etc.  The AP and IB tests are very soon.  The Prom went very well.  The Safe and Sober Prom Pledge meeting was held after the prom, but was still good to teach and encourage good behavior.  The administration is beginning to work on next year’s budget, and on spending the rest of his years money.  They are beginning to prepare for next year and are looking at filling the open staff positions.  Many student activities are going on and there is a pep rally on Friday for spring sports.  He requested that everyone vote for the school bond issue.  He feels it is important that there be a plan and schedule for the next 20 years to renovate the school and campus.  As the principal, he cannot promote this, but can give facts about bond issue.  However, the PTSA board can promote it, and the word should be spread regarding the importance to Grimsley on the passing of the bond issue.  If passed, Grimsley is slated to receive track and gym renovations, and a new cafeteria,  The Mr. Whirley contest will be May 30, with the senior dance held afterward at the Kress Building.  The last day for seniors is June 4.  Teacher Appreciation is the first week of May.  May 8 is the Teacher Appreciation lunch.  The Senior Tea is May 14.   The Special Events Center was a good venue for the prom.  Board members suggested that it should be held later in the year, next year.  It was also discussed that there was too much of the wrong type of food.  Suggest dessert instead for future years.  The kids had a great time and were well behaved.

Treasurer’s Report

Teri Hammer reported that we raised $2300 from working the concession stand at the ACC tournament.  Not many other changes from last month, and we have taken in at least $3000 since last month.

Patricia Aaronson mentioned that there is a good money making opportunity at the Grasshoppers games idea by running a beer cart.  Alcohol sales would prevent students from being able to work at this activity.  She also recognized Susan Gentry for all her hard work running the coliseum concession stand like a business.  It is a good fundraising opportunity for any group that is interested.  It is a fun job, and many people come back to work even though they don’t have students here

Committee Reports

Book Sale – Robin Timmons reported that the book sale will be held May 19 from 6-8pm, in conjunction with a short PTSA meeting.

Valerie Stern reported that the Power Girls Leadership program has started.

Beautification – Cynthia Leonard reported that the potholes in parking lot have been filled.  A drain has been unclogged in an area near the gym that was holding water.  There is a concern with the high speed traffic in the athletic parking lot.  Kids use as a cut through and is very dangerous.  It was suggested that maybe this should be blocked off so it could not be used any more.

Calendar – Susan Oliver asked everyone to request dates needed for the calendar.

Faculty Representative – Kemp Dalton confirmed awards dates. PTSA Scholarship application forms are available from Christy Squire.  Linda Sullivan, the testing coordinator, is looking for proctors for EOC’s from May 27-June 10.  Kemp is in charge of Convocation this year.  It will be held Thursday, June 5, at 7:00pm.  Graduation practice is on Wednesday.  Jane Teague will be asked to come back and speak again this year.  Kemp will discuss refreshments needs with Nancy Winborn, for punch and cake and would like the PTSA to provide the money for the refreshments.  Junior parents are needed to help and serve.  Guilford Garden will provide plants for temporary use.  There will be an expense for decorating.  This should be announced in the newsletter to increase parental awareness, and to encourage students to attend.  This is last opportunity for a student event on campus for seniors.  It is a great opportunity to take pictures in cap and gown on the campus with family and friends.  The event lasts an hour or so.  Nancy will provide a budget for the May meeting.

Hospitality – Nancy Winborn reported that the prom coat check went very well, that the kids were out in 10 minutes.  There was lots of help.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Rechtin

Grimsley High School PTSA Board Minutes

Minutes of Monday, March 3, 2008

7:00 in the GHS Media Center

In attendance:  Valerie Stern, Susan Oliver, Eric Vestal, Alana Neal, Kevin Fleming, Nancy Winborn, Kemp Dalton, Donna Kabadi, Kate Cummings, Patricia Aronson, Teri Hammer, Melissa Mitchell, Robin Timmons, Karen Rechtin

Minutes of February 4 meeting were approved.

President’s Report

Melissa Mitchell shared the thank you notes sent to Nancy Winborn for cookies, and from the school nurse to Teri Hammer for first aid kits.  The PTSA received 72 Webkins from Toys and Company.

On February 25, some PTSA members attended the School Climate Task Force meeting.  A copy of the report distributed at meeting is available for review.  Common problems sited by many schools were discipline, communication, SRO roles, Principal’s ideas that can be implemented immediately without cost, inconsistent discipline policies, and that there is never a predictable day at a school.  The School Board is seeking input from the community, and is seeking comments online.

PTSA nominations are needed for the board for next year.  We need a President, as Melissa Mitchell cannot serve again.  Friday, March 7, the PTA Council Awards are due.  Someone is needed to write up submissions.  Contact Melissa if you would like to make a nomination or to write submissions.

Miscellaneous announcements:

  • We have collected almost $9000 in the donation campaign, and are waiting for matching funds.  Patricia Aronson has gone to leadership for ideas on how to use the money.
  • Recycling bins have been ordered and they should come in soon.
  • The Goodwill Challenge begins March 3.
  • Guidance still needs donations of basic school supplies.

Principal’s Report

Staff Update:  Mr. Fleming reported that the new physics teacher has started teaching and that they are in the process of hiring another chemistry teacher.  The current chemistry teachers are filling in until someone is hired, and will work with the new teacher.

Madame Tourret and Mr. Courts are sharing the IB/AP coordinator position.

Registration numbers for next year are being considered for staffing for next year.  Four teachers are looking to transfer out, 39 looking to transfer in, 20 more were picked up at transfer fair.  New hires are desired for the remainder of the open positions.

Grimsley has just finished a writing blitz, to prep sophomores for the writing test, which is being held tomorrow.  The school is currently looking to hire someone to work part time, specifically for reading instruction for struggling students.

Security Update:  Additional SRO’s have started working and are on campus earlier and later than Officer Ridgell.  Engineers were on campus last week to survey the school for cameras.  The first server will support 50 cameras, and we have funds for some of these.  150 cameras are needed to cover entire campus.  Money will be requested in the budget for next year to purchase cameras.

The PTSA should consider supporting the upcoming bond issue.  Grimsley would benefit from the passing of the bond issue with a cafeteria expansion and six new classrooms.  The cafeteria serves 900 students in 80 minutes every day.  Students currently eat in the hallway, grove, etc., as the cafeteria only seats 396 students.  The existing cafeteria would be converted into new classrooms.  New sports facilities including a new track, tennis courts, and football fields are included in the plans.

Treasurer’s Report

Teri Hammer reported a $699 increase in the balance as the defibrillators did not cost as much as anticipated.  The Board voted to move these additional funds to the general budget and to allocate them to fundraising, as that is where the money originally came from.

Grimsley CARES-Valerie Stern reported that the JBC Institute will bring in a leadership program for girls.  It is a four session program for girls with leadership potential.  Girls will be nominated for the program by teachers, counselors, each other, etc.  The vision is for Grimsley to continue this program after the first four free sessions are complete.  Grimsley will be on the cover of Power Girls magazine, published through the JBC Institute.

Nancy Winborn volunteered to coordinate the lunches.  Grimsley is not in danger of failing the inspection.  The committee will recommend areas where improvement is needed, and the school has 2 years to make changes and report actions on recommendations.

Budget requests for next year will be discussed at the next meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:55.

President’s Report

Melissa Mitchell shared a thank you card sent by the EC students thanking the PTSA for the funds provided for the bus passes.  A thank you for copying services was sent from Mrs. Bardsley.

A General PTSA Meeting was held on Thursday, January 31.  The drum line performed, and was presented a plaque from xxxxx as a thank you for helping with their fundraiser.

There were approximately 60-70 parents in attendance at the Principal’s Forum held in conjunction with the PTSA meeting.  There was good exchange between parents and Mr. Fleming until 9:00.

The next newsletter will have the final list of donors to the fundraising campaign.  It is expected that the $10,000 goal will be met.  Please submit ideas for ways to use this money.  We need to have a few substantial projects to review as a board.

Everyone should start thinking about nominations for the Grimsley PTSA for next year.  Also, the PTSA needs to make council nominations, please send ideas to Melissa.

Principal’s Report:

Mr. Fleming reported that next week we will be starting registration for next year.  Grimsley is adding a couple of AP and IB courses, and is putting some focus on growing elective programs.   Advisory has gotten off to a start this year, with a focus on Positive Behavorial Support and character education.  A few teachers have attended the training.    The decision now needs to go to the faculty to see if they are interested in implementing, as there must be 80% support in order to implement.  Grimsley has been identified as a Bubble school, which means the probability is low that the school will make AYP next year.  As there is some potential to make AYP, downtown administration has asked what Grimsley would need to do to make AYP.  The Grimsley administrators have submitted ideas for tutoring to bring scores up.

Representatives of the senior class have met with Mr. Fleming to express interest in starting a Breakfast Club.  Club members would work with 8th grade students at Kiser that need guidance when they come to Grimsley.  He has asked them to recruit juniors and other underclassmen to help, as juniors (or younger) will be here longer.  This group will need a club sponsor, and Mr. Miller suggested that Mr. Fleming be the sponsor.  The PTSA will pay for food cost for this project.

The security camera project will get started soon.  New technology (IP server, IP camera) will be used.  We are working to determine where first 30-50 should be installed, with a final total of 120 cameras.  Mr. Christina has started working on plan.  Four cameras are needed for the main hall.  The exterior of the campus has the first camera priority as it is hardest to supervise.  The officers for the second SRO position have been selected.  Many of them currently work the sporting events, so they already know some of the students.  Teachers and administrators are participating in greater daily supervision.  Mr. Fleming is tracking suspension data; 200 kids were suspended in first 12 weeks of school and in the last 6 weeks, there have only been 20 suspensions.

There are still staff vacancies, in physics vacancy and a half time chemistry.  The physical education and math vacancies have been filled.  We have had a successful winter sports season.  The Winter Choral Event has been rescheduled.  There was a request for a charter bus for the swim team to the finals.  This weekend, Mr. Fleming picked up a bunch of stuff from the UNCG warehouse including furniture and lockers.

Treasurer’s Report:   Teri Hammer made a format change to the budget sheet to make it easier to read.  We have received donations of $8575 to date for the fundraiser.  Continue to encourage donations to meet goal.  Membership has done great job of recruiting, and have brought in more income than projected.  Disbursements are in line with where we should be to date.

Committee Reports:

Newsletter -  The deadline for the next newsletter is February 10.  Send information to Elizabeth Stevens.

Volunteers -  Christy Hobson needs everyone to send volunteer hours for November, December and January.  Include time spent at board meetings, committee meetings, general meetings, and for any volunteer work.

Calendar -  Communicate calendar updates to Karen Eusebio or Susan Oliver

Grimsley CARES  - Valerie Stern reported that there was a good meeting at Hampton Homes last weekend, and they are waiting for a meeting with administration.  Grimsley and Hampton Homes are looking for parents to sit on each other’s boards.  There are discussions with the minister of Daystar Ministry to partner with Grimsley.  Daystar Ministry is very youth oriented.

Booster Club - Mike Dunn reported on a successful campus clean up.  Coaches asked athletes to attend, and there was a good turnout with about 25% of student athletes.  Lots of cleanup accomplished.

Leadership - Mildred Powell reported that she will speak with Cathy Daniels Lee for dates for Josephine Boyd Bradley visit.  Further information will be distributed via email.

Hospitality - Nancy Winborn reported that cookie baking will take place at 2:00, Wednesday, February 13th at Starmount Presbyterian Church.  Volunteers are needed to bake 2400-2600 cookies.  Coat check volunteers are needed for TWIRP for two shifts on February 16.

Beautification – Cynthia Leonard - clean up went well, lots accomplished

Orchestra Rep - Karen Eusebio reminded us of the joint orchestra and chorus concert scheduled for February 21st.  Carrabas is catering a dinner .  Tickets are for sale by orchestra members, and in the grove.  22 students were selected for all region all state orchestra.  This is the largest representation of any school.

Reflections - Ann Helton reported that several Grimsley entries went to the county competition, and that we won four 4 awards at the county level

Faculty Rep - Kemp Dalton had no report, but commented on what he heard about the discussions at the Principal’s Forum.   He reported that those in attendance said that it was an uncomfortable meeting, as there was too much personal agenda discussed.  It was suggested that other staff members are available at these meetings in the future to assist in answering questions.

Membership – Evelyn Walker reported that there have been no new memberships since the last meeting and that there will be one more push in the next newsletter.  A note was made that student winners of the PTSA scholarship must be PTSA members.

Media Center Rep – Kate Cummings reported that the SACS committee will meet with the leadership committee tomorrow.  The report submitted to SACS last week.  SACS committee members will visit Grimsley March 11 – 12.  Parent volunteers are needed to talk to the committee.

Concession Stand Volunteers - Patricia Aronson needs volunteers to work the concession stand at the Women’s ACC and NCAA tournaments at the coliseum.  This is a big fundraiser for Grimsley, and we have made up to $2400 in the past.

Minutes of the December 3, 2007 meeting were approved

President’s Report – Melissa Mitchell reported that Grimsley student Lily Proctor is back to present information on the recycling containers that ACE wants to purchase for the campus.  They are $69 each, and will hold up much better than those currently on campus.  They will order six cans to be used in the grove and in front of the main building for $414.  The cans will be lined with school supplied trash bags.  Special education class may be interested in helping with this recycling project.  Lily will look into having a partner school in China.

The next PTSA General Meeting will be held January 31, in conjunction with the Principal’s Forum.  The manager of the Guilford County Parks will make a commendation to the drum line at this meeting.  Committees are welcome to have tables in the hall if desired.  There will be a meeting at Kernodle Middle School on January 10, to discuss how race, ethnicity and culture are impacting our schools.  Grimsley is building a relationship with Daystar Ministry (in church across Westover from Grimsley) for an after school program and other programs for students.

Treasurer’s Report - Melissa reported for Teri Hammer.  Donations to date are $8130, and the deadline for donations has been extended to the end of January to provide additional time to make the $10,000 goal.  We will look for recommendations for the use of the donations, and ideas can be brought to the PTSA in February and March for decision and approval.

Principal’s Report – Mr. Fleming reported that new part time SRO has been hired to be on campus between 11 and 4, 5 days a week.  There have been additional officers on campus in the morning before school, at lunch and at dismissal.  There is a group of officers that will rotate being on campus, starting this week or early next week.  Sam Hyman recommended the reinstatement of picking up trash as punishment, and the pros and cons of this were discussed by the group.  Mr. Fleming passed on a thank you for faculty brunch provided by the PTSA before winter break.  We are closer to the installation of cameras this school year.  A large amount of the funds needed are available.  The project will be put to bid, and paid from the central office budget.

There has been another incident at school, and the students involved will be suspended.  The incident was a carry over from a neighborhood problem.  AYP must be re-established every three years, and this is the year for Grimsley. There are a few algebra and English students that may not pass EOC courses, and because of this Grimsley may not make AYP this year.

Committee Reports

Student Rep - Sam Hyman reported that they are continuing to plan the Win a Date with a Senior fundraiser, proceeds to be used to purchase supplies for EC department.  There are currently two more days to purchase tickets, hope to reach goal.  The Special Events Center at the Coliseum is booked for April 12 for the prom.  The Kress Building (previously booked for the prom this year) is not large enough for a junior/senior prom.  The Student Council is looking for ways to use the Kress Building for another event, as there is non-refundable deposit on the Kress building of $1800.  Board members will work to get the deposit refunded if the school decides not to use the building for another event.  Students are working with Mr. Fleming to get a new honor code approved before exams this year.  The code will state infractions and punishments.  Students are working on a welcome back video (for new year).  It will be a call to action to and for students.

Faculty Rep – Kemp Dalton passed on a thank you for copying from Mrs. Bardsley.  Face to Face will be held February 4.  Kemp has offered to take over convocation responsibilities, and needs a committee of underclass parents to work with him.  Convocation is held before graduation on the Grimsley campus.

Valerie Stern- presented information on the Grimsley CARES program.  They are getting many positive responses and feedback, many community members are expressing interest in participating.  The black community is looking for leadership, and there must be buy in from this community for the success of program in their community.  This program will positively affect all students at Grimsley.

Newsletter - Deadline is February 10.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:25.

Presidents Report

Melissa Mitchell reported that the second defibrillator (AED) was delivered Tuesday and is currently in the office.  Alana will coordinate training times.  The final invoice has been received.

101 donations have been received totaling over $7500 in donations.  Donors will be listed in the next newsletter.  We will continue to solicit donations to reach $10,000 goal.  A list of donors that made donations with their PTA membership is needed from the membership committee, so that they are also recognized for their donations.  Teri Hammer will need a list of these donations in order to move these funds from membership to donations.  Everyone should investigate matching gifts from businesses to increase donations.

There will be two more GCS Task Force Meetings.  Everyone should try to attend if possible.  One will be at the Senior Center in High Point, and one at Dudley High School.   Findings will be presented after all meetings have been conducted.  Anyone can go online to GCS website to get questions and submit answers for addition to the findings.

Principal’s Report- Mr. Fleming reported that Mrs. Barnhart, senior class advisor, has questioned the need for convocation.  She feels it has gotten to be too large a task to organize, and is asking for PTSA help with planning and organization.  Many in attendance felt strongly that this is an event that needs to continue, and that the PTSA should do whatever is needed to continue the event.  Kemp Dalton will talk with her to see what kind of help she needs.  Student involvement executing the event will be considered.

Safety and security–existing lighting is being repaired and additional lighting is being installed.  It is estimated that it will cost about $250,000 to install cameras throughout the campus.  Phased pricing estimates will be received soon.  Funds have been found for additional personnel here, and a decision needs to be made as to what position will be most valuable to increasing security.  The SIMMS report shows over 100 suspensions in September and October.  The number of student suspensions has decreased since September.  He has not received any negative feedback yet from administration regarding the number of suspensions.  A program is available for suspended students at a Baptist Church, to keep them occupied and to get them help.  Mr. Fleming is holding re-entry conferences with all students returning to school after a suspension.  There have been good results to date with this process.  A report of all suspended students is being sent to all staff daily for their awareness.

Grimsley is applying for The Positive Behavioral Support Program.  At the end of first quarter, the overall GPA at Grimsley was 3.1.  This looks good except for the number of course failures; the freshman class had 480 failures, 300 sophomore course failures, 250 junior course failures, 175 senior course failures.  Individual meetings will be held with each of these students by counselors, coaches, etc. to get these students back on track.

Extracurricular activities; The musical Sussical, was lots of fun.  The fall sports teams had good seasons.  Several student groups have expressed interest in helping with fundraisers.  Canned food drives are being organized now.

A Media Center specialist has been hired, and will start at semester break. There is still a math vacancy and there will be a physics vacancy in the second semester (Mr. Griffin leaving).  There has been mention of year around school, 45 days on/15 days off.  It is thought to stop the ‘summer slide’ in student’s retention of knowledge.

Committee Reports

Directory-Meredith Muse reported that the student directories are ready.  They are $5.00 each, and are available in the main office.  The committee will set up a table at school events to sell.

Hospitality-Nancy Winborn reported the Holiday Brunch for staff will be held on December 20.  There are still a few pounds of Whirlee Brand Starbucks Coffee that need to be sold.

Leadership – Two teachers attended a Positive Behavioral Support seminar (Grimsley has applied for this program.)  Staff will be asked to vote on implementing this program at Grimsley.  An 80% faculty buy in is required before this program can be put into place.   The program teaches staff how to treat and communicate with students, and rewards good student behavior.  Also discussed were Grimsley/Page dress and behavior.  The student council has been asked to make more appropriate theme days, etc.

Student Rep-Sam Hyman reported that they are trying to organize an inner-club council that will include heads of all clubs.  The purpose is to organize and coordinate the service efforts of all clubs.  The Holiday Service Project for Hunter Elementary is still short of their 450 stuffed animal goal.  The deadline for stuffed animal donations is December 18, animals will be delivered on December 19.  The fundraiser Win a Date with a Senior Guy, is being planned.  Proceeds will be used to purchase supplies for the EC department.  Raffle tickets will be sold for $1.00 each.  As students cannot hold a raffle, Sam asked if the PTSA would sponsor it, handle the funds and then make a donation of the proceeds.  Raffle winners will be announced at the final basketball game.  The PTSA board approved to sponsor the Win a Date with a Senior Guy fundraiser.

Membership-Evelyn Walker reported they are still getting a few memberships. An additional $100 has been collected since last report.

Faculty Rep-Kemp Dalton read a request from Mrs. Bollick (counselor) that needs donations of binders, pencil pouches, note cards, pencils, etc. for students that need supplies.  The school did not get any donations from Fill the Bus this year as we have in the past, so we are short supplies.  These donations are tax deductible and cash donations are accepted.   Mrs. Adams sent thanks to everyone for their good kids and for good supporters/parents, etc.  Copy volunteers should to call teachers for their code.  There are donations of large items that have been made to Grimsley that need to be picked up.  To get this done, a truck and manpower are needed.

Newsletter-Elizabeth Stevens reported that the deadline is now for the January/February issue.

Reflections-Entries are due December 12 and should be turned in to Mrs. Lawson.

Grimsley student, Lily Proctor, made a presentation about ACE (Act to Conserve Environment.)  This group of students would like to take steps to make Grimsley an International Environment school.  One of the initiatives is to get students recycling all drink bottles and cans.  To accomplish this, the campus needs larger and stronger recycling bins, to stand up better in the wind and don’t need to be emptied as often.  ACE is asking for a monetary donation from the PTSA to help purchase the bins.  The club feels that they need up to 12 bins around campus, and want to start the program with 6.  The board approved a motion to purchase three $75 to $125 recycling cans for ACE.  Fox 8 will interview ACE to see how Grimsley is working qualify to be an International Environment School.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:55

Minutes of October 1 meeting were approved

President’s Report

The Fundraiser/Campaign letter went out this month.  Only received 30 returned/unopened out of 1700 sent.  Several donations have already been received.

The board is talking over meeting ideas for rest of year to get in the required number of general meetings.  Mr. Fleming wants to have a Principals Forum quarterly, it may be combined with the general PTSA meeting.  Next general meeting is November 7.  Ideas are being discussed to market the donations campaign throughout year to continue the income stream.

The membership committee has done great job, we have a good increase in membership.

Treasurer’s Report

A budget report was distributed.  PTSA dues have brought in more than expected at this point of the year.  The donation campaign is off to a good start as we have received $3600 in donations from 50 or so donors.  Donor’s names will be on the website and in the newsletter soon.  Goal is to raise $10000 or more with donations campaign.  The Tailgate before the Grimsley/Page football game was a good success.  It made $135 and covered all expenses.  We ordered and should have two defibrillators on campus.  Per Coach Newman, there is only one in the gym.  It goes on the Gator during home games.  The second will be available in the next couple of weeks.  We have not yet been billed, but want to pay for them.  Having hard time getting billing or information from person ordered from.

Principal’s Report

Mr. Fleming reported that there are still two faculty vacancies, a media center specialist and a math teacher.  Currently two teachers are filling in for the math teacher and will help through end of semester if needed.

There was a faculty meeting today.  The faculty was asked to do a Needs Assessment at the beginning of year which he has received and analyzed and will use in future analysis and planning.  The senior project write up will be reviewed to plan for the next couple of years, this is a good opportunity for community partnership.  Wednesday is the first Principal’s Forum.  There is no planned agenda.  It will be a loose format where parents can ask anything they want, make recommendations for improvement, etc. Face to Face is scheduled from 4-6:30, on November 13th.  Advisories will be held by homeroom this year, once a month.  The purpose is to help to create personal relationships between student and faculty.  Teachers will be given a lesson plan for each session this year.  In the future, more formal training will be provided for teachers on how to do successful advisories.  Campus safety update……the superintendent responded to concerns by having the  maintenance head come over to inspect lighting, by getting a security camera team putting together proposal, and by offering that security personnel assigned to other offices might be shifted to Grimsley for remainder of year.  The climate of the school has calmed down a lot.  Several students have been asked to ‘not be present’ for some time, which has helped the atmosphere.  Administrators are now available every period of day ‘on call’ for classrooms to deal with large disruptions.  There are now 30 walkie talkies strategically placed throughout the school.  This will allow administrators to immediately take care of issues.  The school was having two incidents every period, now it is down to two incidents a day.  The students that participated in the attack on another student will not be back in school this year.  Mr. Fleming is collecting data on every suspension, for future questioning and reference.  He is preparing for questioning if suspension rate too high.  The priority is making the school a safe environment for students and staff.

To decide if a student should be suspended, the assistant principal and principal have conversation to decide about suspension.  A reentry conference is scheduled for the day they come back.  A conference is held with the student to make plan to prevent the behavior from happening again.  The student has opportunity to make up all work, but the time must be made up out of own time.  There is a discussion of what will happen if student is suspended another time.  There is a plan to help the student stay out of trouble.

Committee Reports

Athletic Boosters – Mike Dunn gave a reminder that soccer playoffs and football playoffs are this week Wednesday and Friday at 7:00.  Need attendees, especially for soccer.  The golf tournament was a huge success this year as it raised over $10,000.  Whirley wear will be sold this week at athletic events and at a holiday market in December.  New items are being added.

Beautification - Niki Bloomquist reported that beautification day was not well attended.  Only 1 gift certificate was given out.  Another cleanup day will be held December 8 and 9.  The baseball team will fix picnic tables, another group wants to clean and fix up bathrooms.  ACE wants to purchase 12 more recycle containers at $232.50.  They would clean out every day and take care of the recycle materials.  Dec 8 and 9, Feb 9 and March 15.

Hospitality - Treat bags were put in teacher boxes on Halloween with a fall theme, something will be done for the staff in December winter theme.

Project Graduation – Alana Neal reported that everyone’s participation is needed to make it a success.

Membership – Evelyn Walker reported that 174 adults and148 students have joined the PTSA.  $1207 donations were received for a total of $3739 collected.  Alana requested to know how many staff members have joined.

Reflections -Ann Helton reported that entries are due December 12

Faculty Rep - Kate Cummings reported for Kemp Dalton. Mr. Bethea wants a $2000 contribution for DECA for students to attend DECA conference.  Last year the PTSA donated $1000 for this conference, in trade for marketing efforts.  The board declined the request as it is too early in year to make this type of contribution when we are not yet sure what need to do with PTSA resources.  They should be encouraged to earn the money in other fundraising activities.  Sara Boyt is looking into free money from Microsoft based on hits on their website.  The staff said thank you for goodie bags.

Wendy Oakes researched and mentioned the AP Ruth award for the best all around student.  She has done research on the history of award, and found that it has not been awarded for a couple of years.  It has been taken off the budget as line item.  In the past it was two $200 checks.  The PTSA should put this on the list of considerations of where to spend funds later in year.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:40.

  • Beautification – Niki Bloomquist reported that Campus Cleanup Day is October 27 from 9:00-3:00
  • Athletic Boosters – Valerie Stern reported that she will begin getting volunteers organized for the tailgate event prior to the Grimsley/Page football game.  Ticket sales need to begin asap this week.
  • Faculty Rep – Kemp Dalton thanked the copy volunteers for setting up the copy center and reported that some orders are not getting completed in a timely manner.  Alana Neal asked for volunteers for bathroom escorts today.  There is a senior here whose family received an SAT waiver, which they just lost due to parent getting raise.  Kemp asked if there a fund that PTA could use to pay for this?  Mr. Fleming told him to send the request to guidance and it will get taken care of that way.  PSAT will be given to underclassmen on October 17th, and seniors need to find reason for excused or exempted absence.  They must bring a note, forms in office.  It is an early release day.  The senior parents meeting will be held in late October, date to be announced.
  • Student Rep – Sam Hyman announced the Grimsley/Page tee shirt design is ready.  The shirt was designed by a student and is blue with white lettering.  They ordered more this year so that they will not run out as in previous years.  The shirts are $12 and are sold at lunch in grove.  There are lots of activities planned for Grimsley/Page week, and they are trying to get student interest.  There are many campus decorating ideas, daily themes for spirit week, Thursday night bonfire and the Friday night game.  He was asked to have students promote the tailgate, as it is a fundraiser this year.  Monday night, October 8th at 7:30 is the Powder Puff game.  Freshman elections have been moved to next week due to lack of interest from student body.  Students had to be recruited to run for positions.
  • Leadership Team – Patricia Aronson announced that Tiera Hurley is a semi finalist for the National Achievement Scholarship.  Grimsley was recognized as one of 12 schools that was ejection free last year from athletic events.

Primcipal’s Report

Mr. Fleming explained the details of the students being attached last week.  One student was attacked and badly hurt between classes by a student who had been escorted off campus for causing problems in ISS.  The next day another student was hit by another student in a bathroom.  The incidents do not appear to be related in any way.

Currently, if a student is asked to leave school for causing a problem, administrators can put child on bus with parent’s permission to leave school if the parents can’t pick up the student.  From now on, when suspended if they disrupt the class, they will be arrested and taken to jail until parent can pick up.

There was a very strong feeling by board that these students should be escorted off campus.  Several board members expressed concern about not enough supervision between classes by staff.

Mr. Fleming was questioned about not notifying the parents sooner and not sending a Connect Ed message the night of the attack.  He cited the privacy of family of student and that the police investigation requires him to be careful in what he says.  A letter would not get home with majority of students, so the decision was made to mail the letter with other pieces of information they needed to mail anyway.

What has been done in the short term to ensure safety and to prevent these types of things from happening again:

  • To enable more supervision, students can only eat lunch in the cafeteria, in the grove or on the front lawn.  They are trying to figure out what to do about lunch tutoring that is currently held in classrooms.
  • There was additional police support first couple of days, and they are on call as needed.  Additional administrative and parental support was provided.
  • A meeting was held on Friday for freshman.  Talked to them about their behavior: dress, getting to class on time, keeping hands off each other (or suspension), not showing disrespect to others.  Start behaving like upperclassmen.
  • A meeting was held with the seniors today pointing out that they are being limited due to these behavior problems.  They were asked to step up and be good role models, as they have influence on other students.  They should let faculty know if problems are brewing. The students don’t like the bad reputation and negative publicity that these incidents cause.
  • Let students know no tolerance for aggressive or disruptive behavior, they will be suspended.
  • Students need to be escorted to and from bathroom.

Things to be done in the long term to ensure student safety and prevent these types of things from happening again:

  • Looking into cameras to be placed throughout the campus
  • Additional personnel-assistant principal or counselor
  • Adding a second SRO
  • If student is disruptive in ISS, they will be arrested and taken to jail
  • List of kids currently suspended sent to faculty so they are aware of students that should not be in school
  • Put walkie talkies through school in strategic places and with certain people, to call for administrators if needed

Grimsley is an opt out high school, so we get many kids that don’t want to be/can’t be in other high schools.

The faculty appreciates Mr. Fleming taking a hard line on behavior issues.  They are tired of dealing with problems all the time.

Mr. Fleming welcomes feedback and input.

There being no additional business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:05.

Grimsley High School PTSA Board Minutes

Meeting of Monday, September 10, 2007

7:00pm in the GHS Media Center

In attendance:  Melissa Mitchell, Karen Rechtin, Cynthia Leonard, Kemp Dalton, Melanie Rodenbough, Sam Hyman, Mildred Powell, Ann Helton, Alana Neal, Kate Cummings, Laura Friedman, Carol Vance, Patricia Aronson, Evelyn Walker, Valerie Stern, Sandra Howell, Kevin Fleming.

Minutes for August 20th meeting approved with corrections to name spelling.

Principal’s Report

Mr. Fleming reported that he is very pleased with the opening of school and freshman orientation.  There has been a 20% turnover in faculty and 40% turnover in administration, and some turnover in counseling. With the exception of a media center replacement, Grimsley is now fully staffed.  The final assistant principal was just hired.

He felt Walk the Schedule Night was successful, and would like to have input for planning for next year.  Grimsley met AYP. As the ABC incentive was met, all teachers that were on staff last year will each receive $1500.  This achievement is based on growth, which harder to achieve when starting at a higher level.  He is very impressed with quality of faculty and how fun the children are.  Enrollment is now 1865, and was projected 1805.  If enrollment goes 75 over projection, we will get an additional teacher.  Most classes are currently balanced, so there should not be any drastic changes.  There are 120 students new to Grimsley.  Enrollment was1698 on the first day of school, and we may pick up a few more tomorrow, the 10th day of school.  The Southern States Committee is coming and a plan needs to be sent out in two weeks.  The Senior Project needs to be the next priority after the Southern States visit.  The fall sports program is off to a good start.  There was discussion about body painting and new regulations regarding it at high school sports events.  Body painting larger than decal size is no longer allowed.  It would be helpful to have information sent home students are aware of rules and imitations.  There was a shift in the lunch schedule for about 200 students due to scheduling problems.

The new assistant principal is Kevin Miller.  His duties include; being the administrator for 1/3 of the student body, working with freshman class, a few small departments, bus scheduling, and building the master calendar.

The gates through campus are closed much more than they were in previous years. They are closed during the school day, as there was too much visitation by folks that didn’t belong on campus.  The teachers felt it was a good idea.  Board members expressed that it is an inconvenience in the evening for meetings, visitors, etc. Mr. Fleming will look into having the gate unlocked after 5:00 when the late busses leave.

Presidents Report

PTSA events held year to date:

  • Freshman Parents Night, August 27.  It was well attended, there was good PTSA presence, Membership collected around $2000
  • Walk the Schedule Night, September 4 was well attended.  The proposed budget approved, but needs to be amended.

Next scheduled PTSA event is the Grimsley-Page Family Tailgating Party on Friday, October 12.

The majority of board members felt walk the schedule was held too early in year this year as schedules can still change, ROTC didn’t get to participate as usual, it was too close to the holiday, and there was not enough time to prepare for it.  The publicity was unclear and confusing.  This has always been the third Monday of the month for high schools.  The PTSA didn’t get input into the date this year as the principal wanted to have it earlier this year.  It was suggested that it should be scheduled NOW for next year so it is held on the desired date.

The next PTSA focus is getting the fundraiser letter in mail.   The special education class will stuff the envelopes.  The letter will describe what the fundraiser is for, and give examples of what the different donation levels will cover.  This will help donors get a tangible example of what their donation will cover.

Sun Trust Bank will donate $100 to the Grimsley PTSA for each new account opened.  The details will appear in next newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report

The PTSA bank account balance is a little over $7000, and is in a good place to start the year.

Commmittee Reports

  • Volunteers - Kristy Hobson reported that so far things are running smoothly, and doing well with volunteers.  There is a schedule of copy volunteers.
  • Book Sale - Robin Timmons needs someone to help her with book sale at end of year
  • Newsletter - should be arriving in homes this week
  • Beautification - Valerie Stern reported that the date for Campus Beautification Day will change to October 27 (was September 15.)  She hopes that all athletic teams will participate, and thinks may be able to increase participation by making it an ‘event’ with music, food, etc. Prisoners were here yesterday to do campus clean up.
  • Tailgate - Party preparations are underway.   We are starting to publicize now to start interest.  This is first year the tailgate will be a fundraiser.
  • Membership - Evelyn Walker reported that membership is currently at 1,191.  A representative from the NCPTSA board asked if we were sending membership cards and said we should be sending out membership cards to continue to be affiliated with CPTSA.  As there are so many, it is very expensive to mail/distribute membership cards.  The board discussed putting the membership list on website, and adding a link to request a copy of membership card if desired.  Leslie Webb has membership cards.  If someone joins at a school event, a card should be given at that time.  Another option is to put them in office and members can pick up if desired.
  • Special Education - Carol Vance had two requests from the board.  The Life Skills class has requested kitchen items for cooking class.  The will provide a proposal at next meeting for utensils, pots and pans, etc.  The Autistic class needs to take the city bus to the library as part of their curriculum.  They will provide a proposal at the next meeting for funds to purchase bus passes.
  • Hospitality – A welcome back lunch was held for teachers.  The next event will be fall treat bags.  An email will be sent requesting item donations in the second week in October.
  • Faculty Rep – Kemp Dalton thanked the hospitality committee for lunch.  He needs names of volunteers for upcoming testing.
  • Media Center Rep – Kate Cummings reported that Grimsley will be visited by SACS KCCSI.  November 7 and 8, and will be asking for parents to come to school to be interviewed.  She will email the board the report tomorrow.  SACS KCCSI visits every 5 years. There are 7 sections reviewed and there are indicators for each standard.  There is a rubric for each standard.  Have to answer 4 focus questions under each standard.  Send Kate feedback.  Kate is looking for volunteers in October to rearranging the fiction section into a way that will make it easier for students to find books they are interested in.  She would like to have someone for an entire day.  The library will be closed during this time.
  • Leadership Team – Patricia Aronson reported they are just getting started, and the meetings are not well attended yet.
  • Student Rep - Sam Hyman reported that freshman elections are September 28, and there is an interest meeting this week.  The homecoming theme is ‘Better Together’ and the TWRP theme is ‘All She Wants to do is Dance’.  The dates will be the same as last year.  The Senior night theme last week was Toga Night, this week it is Hawaiian Night.  They are brainstorming ideas for positive ways to increase school spirit, especially during Grimsley vs. Page week.  Ideas include posters with Go Whirlies, decorating campus with streamers, decorating with sidewalk chalk, having a mascot on campus, increasing student involvement in pep rallies, bonfire, and tailgating.  They discussed decorating routes from Page to Grimsley, having businesses put up marquis’ that say ‘Go Whirlies,’ along the route, etc.  In order to allow more kids to come to the bonfire, there is a need for rides home after the bonfire.  He also reported that there is an interest in getting more carpools together to take students to away games and events.

Additional Business

Patricia suggested that there be some effort put into helping teachers fill their wish lists. Gift cards good idea for Office Depot, as school can benefit from the purchase by linking their purchase to Grimsley.

Early release day is listed wrong on agenda, should be September 18.

There being no additional business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Rechtin, Secretary

In attendance: Melissa Mitchell, Patricia Aronson, Mildred Powell, Mary Nelle Smith, Barbara Beeson, , Laurence Dwyer,  Alana Neal, Kate Cummings, Susan Gentry, Robin Timmins,   Charlene Johnston, Karen Eusebio, and Melanie Rodenbough.

(NOTE: I did not leave the school with my attendance list. If anyone has it, or if you know you were present, please let me know and I will add in the additional names – Melanie)

Minutes of 5/0/07 approved, with a correction of the spelling of Bill’s last name to Tourtellot.

Principal’s Report:

No administrator was present, so Alana responded to a few questions. Kevin (new principal) did visit again in May, and will likely not come again until he moves. Has bought a home. We will plan a reception in August. Because John could not be here tonight, Melissa will make sure his thank you gift gets delivered to him.

Alana conveyed thanks for Staff Appreciation Week remembrances from PTSA. Although PTSA is not doing an end of year lunch, Lifetouch is putting on a barbecue meal for the staff.

We still need to hire a few teachers, but John has hired many.

President’s Report:

Concerns were expressed about the print quality of the yearbook, as well as the new design (less formal) of graduation announcements.

We plan to return to first Monday evenings for Board meetings in the fall. First meeting will be Monday, August 13th at 7 p.m.

The General PTSA meeting was held Monday May 21st. Anita Hyman and Beverly Carruthers were elected by ballot to the parent representatives to the Leadership Team. New PTSA officers were installed.

GHS seniors received $8 M+ in scholarship offers.

Faculty Report: Kemp will be the teacher representative next year to the PTSA Board.

Treasurer’s Report: None. Please send Wendy any outstanding bills or requests for reimbursement. Books close the end of June.

Committee Reports:

  • Nominating – Patricia reported she is still working. We need a secretary.
  • Grade Reps – Charlene reported recipients of scholarships: Rickiah Wingfield chosen for Williams Scholarship; Teresa Whiting for Larry Saunders Teaching award.
  • Josephine Boyd Bradley – Mildred volunteered to head up that committee for next year’s awards and activities. (No formal committee until now, just volunteers).
  • Project Graduation – Susan reported that donations had been down, but are rebounding. Approximately 300 tickets sold, which is typical. Hypnotist begins at 3:00 A.M.
  • Convocation – Barbara has everything ready (Georgie’s is catering,  Bloomquists donated cups and napkins, Patricia has volunteers). Students have expressed some negative feelings, but they are required to come.
  • Newsletter – last issue will come out over summer, per email from Elizabeth.

Additional Business

  • Student Ambassadors have been chosen for freshman orientation, but it is unclear if we will conduct orientation the same way. PTSA is not paying for shirts for the Ambassadors, but will pay for the pizza event as we did this year. Shannon Wyrick is leaving GHS, and it is not clear who will take over freshmen orientation.
  • We will explore a donation campaign for PTSA fundraising next fall.
  • The question was raised whether PTSA will sign the Coliseum Concession contract for the upcoming year. It appears the Band Boosters will not have their own tax exempt status for several months, so they would like to have this fundraising opportunity. Motion made and passed to renew the contract, with the Band Boosters taking primary responsibility for staffing.
  • Patricia thanked the “retiring” parents for their service to GHS and to the PTSA with a gift.

Meeting adjourned at 7:25.

Respectfully submitted by Melanie Rodenbough.

The meeting commenced shortly after 6:00.  Melissa opened the meeting by sharing the Service to Students Award plaque presented to us at the County PTA awards banquet.

Minutes approved from April 10th.

Principals’ Report:

  • A few faculty, especially in math department, are retiring. Have had outstanding applicants, and have filled some positions. Looking for Spanish, EC, and a Treasurer (Dottie is retiring also.) His philosophy is to include staff in interviews.
  • Bud will stay as AP/IB Coordinator. John has bought back all positions, and our instructional money is all there. We have 4 Assistant Principals allotted, though John is not sure who will be our AP’s.
  • Proctors are needed for exams – contact Linda Sullivan.
  • Testing schedule was revised again.
  • John will be scheduling meetings to discuss 9th grade EOC courses, and their significance: students must demonstrate proficiency (Level III or IV) to pass. If they fail, there will be remediation June 18-27th, w/ 2nd test on June 27th. If not proficient, they will attend summer school July 6 – 30th, with a 3rd test. 9th graders have first priority in summer school, then 10, 11, and 12th graders who failed or need a credit. Will use the computer labs for summer school.
  • John will stay here through July to help with scheduling, though he technically ends his tenure here June 30th.
  • Kevin Fleming will visit again before he begins.
  • Darfur Rally went well – thanks again to students who organized.

President’s Report:

  • May 21st is the PTSA Book Sale and PTSA general meeting w/installation of officers.
  • Thanks to Eric for keeping the web site updated.

Treasurer’s Report:

We received approximately $1,000 from the Yard Sale, and $2200 from Coliseum Concessions. Will need $2,000 to start up. Interest expressed in doing a donation campaign for next year’s budget in lieu of fundraising. Anita will work on getting us a better deal on the defibrillators to save money this year. Other ideas were proposed to increase participation in the Harris Teeter VIC program. Additionally the Goodwill van will be parked in the GHS parking lot this week – we get credits toward supplies for donations

Committee Reports:

  • Hospitality – Kathie reported there is not enough money left in their budget to do a big meal for T.A. Week and also end of year. John suggested they go ahead for T.A. week.
  • Grade Rep’s – Charlene reported the grade reps met and selected the Williams Scholarship recipient ($500 goes directly to the student – the money comes from an endowment rather than the PTSA budget – Melissa will give the check to the counseling department to give to recipient after Awards day). We do fund the Larry Saunders award, as well as contributing to the Bradley Scholarship(s).
  • Student Council – Sam introduced Hayley Barringer, who will be the sophomore class president next year. Patricia noted that an issue was raised in the Leadership Team regarding students who might want to participate in Student Council but are prohibited from doing so if they have a zero period class when S.C. meets during zero period. Ongoing discussion.

  • Leadership Team – Patricia also reported from LT that criteria for National Honor Society are being reviewed.
  • Newsletter – final edition in the summer. Material due by end of May.

Meeting Adjourned approximately 7:30.

Next meeting Tuesday, June 5th.

Respectfully submitted by Melanie Rodenbough.

Grimsley High School PTSA Board Minutes

Meeting of Tuesday, April 10, 2007

6:00 p.m. in the GHS Media Center

In attendance: Melissa Mitchell, Valerie Stern, Patricia Aronson, Mary Nelle Smith, Barbara Beeson, Kathy Mack, Anita Hyman, Laurence Dwyer, John Eldridge, Alana Neal, Kate Cummings, Robin Timmins, Kathie Amato, Cathy Daniels-Lee, Sandra Howell, Susan Taaffe, Debbie Faircloth, Teri Hammer, Wendy Oakes, Laurence Dwyer, Eric Vestal, Elizabeth Stephens, Karen Eusebio, and Melanie Rodenbough.

Visitors: Sam Hyman

The meeting commenced at 6:08 p.m. Melissa opened the meeting by thanking Debbie Faircloth for a superb job in writing up our County PTA awards nominations. We had 10 nominations submitted.

Minutes approved from March 6th.

Principals’ Report:

  • Our new principal will be Kevin Fleming, who is retiring from the state of Maryland where he is currently serving as a principal. John had input into the interviews and hiring and is very pleased with the choice. He has a good relationship with his students and is very professional with his staff. His wife will be the District’s AP/IB Coordinator. He will be at Grimsley April 20th for the day to begin to meet the community.
  • Prom will be Saturday, April 14th. Kathie Amato noted that parents would volunteer, as is usually the case, to run the coat-check for the Prom, and they may sign up with the Hospitality committee representatives.
  • John expressed his appreciation to those who participated in the March campus cleanup sponsored by the Beautification Committee.
  • Face to Face will occur Thursday 4/12. All-District Band is here the same night, so John is working to coordinate the two. He will send a Connect Ed message. With input from the Board, John decided to not hold the 9th grade parent meeting but instead to put the information regarding the five EOC course graduation requirements into a letter. The last
  • Face to Face saw 70% of report cards picked up and John is hopeful for another good response.
  • We hope to have 4 AP’s next year. Kevin Fleming will meet with AP’s and then decisions will be made as to whether current AP’s stay at Grimsley. John will be here until June 30th and will continue to help with the transition.

President’s Report:

  • The General Meeting and Book Sale will be Monday, May 21st. Rising 9th graders will receive notice by postcard.
  • Melissa requested that all current Board members let Patricia (Nominating) know where they would like to serve next year.

Treasurer’s Report:

See written report. Budget is very tight, but does not include any proceeds from the Yard Sale (no estimate) and the Coliseum Concessions (approximately $2,000).

Committee Reports:

  • Yard Sale – Valerie has had very few tables reserved and is very concerned about lack of participation.
  • Convocation – Barbara reported that the funding for the reception is not certain, as they were provided by the school last year. We may offer less food. The date is June 7th at 7:00, with the reception afterward in the Grove, weather permitting. Estimate approximately 1,000 people. There was some discussion about this event and its relation to Graduation. The Convocation came about as a way to bring a meaningful graduation celebration back onto campus, since we do not have an indoor facility to accommodate graduation.
  • Newsletter – Elizabeth Stephens noted the deadline is today for the last issue. There will be a summer issue to accommodate end of year awards, etc. The budget should be sufficient for these last two issues.
  • Concessions – There is an opportunity to work concessions at the Grasshoppers games over the summer. The Band is applying for its own non-profit status and so will not need the PTSA to sign the Concessions contract next year. Since PTSA will not have sufficient numbers to have our own contract next year, we may or may not try the Grasshoppers games. Patricia will investigate. Kids must be 18 to work Grasshoppers games due to sale of alcoholic beverages.

Bradley visit – Cathy thanked PTSA for providing a reception.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Next meeting Tuesday, May 1st.

Respectfully submitted by Melanie Rodenbough.

Kemp shared a written letter from Mr. Bethea, thanking the PTSA for our support for DECA and sharing the recent successes of our DECA students.

Announcements: Grade reps need to be aware of PTSA scholarships to be awarded to graduating seniors. Melissa and Wendy will clarify for them the exact awards to be given. The NCAE will meet March 22nd – 24th, and Dr. Josephine Boyd Bradley will be present to be honored

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30.

Next meeting: Tuesday, March 6th at 6:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Grimsley High School PTSA Board Minutes

Meeting of January 8, 2007

7:00 p.m. in the GHS Media Center

In attendance: Cathy Daniels-Lee, Valerie Stern, Charlene Johnston, Wendy Oakes, Debbie Jerry-Hawkins, Mary Nelle Smith, Patricia Aronson, Karen Eusebio, Sandra Howell, Nancy Winborn, Kemp Dalton (faculty representative), Alana Neal, Robin Timmons, Barbara Beeson, Kathie Amato, Lawrence Dwyer, John Eldridge (acting principal) and Melanie Rodenbough

The meeting commenced at 7:05 p.m.

Minutes approved from December.

Principal’s Report:

  • Mr. Eldridge will be at GHS through this school year, and has been relieved of administrative assignments with GCS. GCS will search for someone who could start early to mid-summer.
  • GHS will get a fourth assistant principal.
  • He has filled all positions, including a new math teacher.
  • Face to Face February 1st: will try to provide bus transportation from low income areas. There will be a meeting that same evening with 9th grade parents to discuss the “Big 5” (the five EOC courses that must be passed beginning with that class in order to graduate).
  • In February he is hoping to have someone here to talk with students about the PSAT and its importance in determining what a student can do in high school. He will also look at brining the “AP Potential” program to GHS to better judge a student’s potential success in AP classes. Mr. Eldridge feels that program is a better predictor than the current score of 45 on the PSAT. We also need to look at putting support structures into place to help those students succeed in AP courses – such as tutorials and summer preparation.
  • Requested some discretionary funds form the PTSA if possible, as that account has been depleted.

President’s Report:

  • We introduced ourselves.
  • Thanks to the Reflections Committee.
  • We hope to have nominations for the GC PTA Awards – she will consult with Debbie Faircloth, who agreed to write our awards again.
  • Directory will hopefully be available at the Face to Face.
  • Curriculum Fair date to be announced.
  • Melissa met with Valerie Stern, Anita Hyman and Beth Kattman, who will be organizing a giant PTSA yard sale in the spring. Date and further plans to be announced. This will be our big fundraiser for the year.
  • Coliseum events are approaching – one immediately, and then the Women’s basketball events in March: ACC March 1-4; NCAA March 24 and 26. Sign-up sheet circulated, or call Susan Gentry 379-7480 if you can work a shift.
  • Details of the new exam schedule were discussed, and the schedule distributed (attached to written Minutes.) Seniors may be exempt from some exams, based upon attendance and grade average in the course.
  • Need PTSA volunteers at tables for Face to Face.
  • Will look at a revised date for April PTSA meeting, due to spring break.

Treasurer’s Report:

See written report. We are doing well financially. We may be able to free up funds for Mr. Eldridge to have some discretionary funds, but need to know the needs and have appropriate documentation and PTSA approval prior to funds being spent.

Committee Reports:

  • Hospitality – no date for faculty spring lunch. TWIRP Feb. 10th at the Marriott. Hope to do Valentine cookie boxes again.
  • Web site – Eric and Melissa have been working to upgrade the web site.
  • Nominating committee needs to begin its work.

Faculty Report:

  • Kemp inquired again as to the volunteer photocopying program that has been organized in the past by PTSA. Melissa is trying to line up a coordinator – the volunteers are available but need leadership.
  • Linda Sullivan needs volunteers to proctor tests: March 13th writing test – 8:30 – 11:45. She will have more need at EOG/EOC time.
  • Inquiry as to whether PTSA has plain GHS note cards available – we used to give these to teachers and counselors. Melissa will inquire.
  • Request from Mr. Bethea, the DECA program coordinator: he needs financial help to send students to the State convention in GSO in March. He is asking for $700. Motion made and passed unanimously to approve $700 from “special projects” fund. Mr. Eldridge will check to see if he actually needs more and will let us know.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45.

Next meeting: Monday, February 5, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
